Guidelines and best practices

Interaction between European experimental facilities is stimulated through discussions of technologies and scientific background information between competent researchers of the institutions. HYDRALAB III consequently decided to create fora for such discussions with the aim of producing state-of-the-art documents covering four topics of relevance for the hydrodynamic research community. These topics relate to waves, breakwaters, sediment and ecology.

Representatives of HYDRALAB partners have developed joint documents during workshops and subsequent exchange of information. HYDRALAB publish these documents under the heading ‘Guidelines and best practices’. By the end of March 2009 three of the documents have been issued and they are at present available upon request through hydralab@deltares.nl.

  • Guidelines for wave modelling in flumes and basins: Hydraulic model testing in waves,
    (delNA3.1-1_HYDRALAB-III_GBP_waves.pdf)

  • Guidelines for physical model testing of breakwaters: Rubble mound breakwaters,
    (delNA3.1-2_HYDRALAB-III_GBP_breakwaters.pdf)

  • Guidelines for physical modelling of sediment dynamics,
    (delNA3.1-3_HYDRALAB-III_GBPsediment.pdf)

The Guidelines on experiments in ecology is under preparation and will be issued by mid 2009.

The ‘Guidelines’ are intended to be dynamic documents and updated versions are planned for issue by the end of HYDRALAB III – March 2010.

Comments, alterations and additional material are welcome and should be sent to the document editors:

Wave modelling: Mr. Jens Kirkegaard, DHI, Denmark (jkj@dhigroup.com);
Breakwater testing: Dr. Guido Wolters, Deltares, the Netherlands (guido.wolters@deltares.nl);
Sediment modeling: Dr James Sutherland, HR Wallingford, UK (j.sutherland@hrwallingford.co.uk);
Ecological modeling: Dr Lynne Frostick, Hull TES, UK (L.E.Frostick@hull.ac.uk).

and with copy to the HYDRALAB coordinator (hydralab@deltares.nl)

The HYDRALAB partners wish to share the information with scientists and experimental workers outside the group of partners and will therefore make the documents available at the public part of the website in the near future.
